Eugene McIntire grew up in Yardley, Pennsylvania with way too many siblings. He is currently based in Portland, Maine studying for his BFA in Sculpture at Maine College of Art & Design (MECA&D). Despite this he constantly daydreams about moving to Denmark to be with his family. He won the Recycled Arts Competition in 2023 and has participated in yearly BFA exhibitions at MECA&D. In 2024, Eugene worked as an intern with sculptor Hanna Vogel on her exhibition, The Cusp, at Fleischer Art Memorial in Philadelphia, PA. While sculpting is his primary focus he also enjoys creating functional ceramics, textiles and metalsmithing. Outside of art, Eugene can often be found bed-rotting with a migraine, collecting shiny pebbles or experimenting with new baking recipes at 3 am.
I live in an existence of a failed function: recalling abilities I used to have but no
longer possess. My experiential works wrap the essence of failure in the distorted lens of
nostalgia and memory. We replay, rewrite and romanticize distant experiences. Living on
repeat.
I elevate trash while bastardizing steel and clay, combining them into an
installation that will ultimately fail. My work may hang or spin, inviting you to escape into
nostalgia to see the deeper feelings underneath. But like all of my kinetic works, they're
always moving and never getting anywhere.
